DISTRESS AND WORKING MEMORY AMONG MIDDLE AGED WOMEN

ABSTRACT

Middle aged women are prone to stress on their daily life. Mental health issues like depression are well researched. The aspect of cognitive dysfunction related to psychological issues is the key area with limited research works. The relationship of life event and working memory capacity is well ex- plored by Klein (2001). Chronic stress with poor coping mechanisms results in a state of distress and altered cortisol levels. PURPOSE: To analyze the relationship between distress and working memory among middle aged women. METHOD: Theoretical study based on review of literature in recent re- search papers. Key words used in performing this research included distress, memory, neurotransmitters, stress, middle aged women with distress, cognitive retraining and neurogenesis. Research papers were analyzed to obtain models, mechanism of working memory and coping mechanisms for distress. RESULT: Distress is found to alter cortisol levels, modify the neuronal circuit and impair working memory. Psychotherapy, cognitive retraining, meditation, exercises, diet, oxygen therapy and music therapy were found to enhance working memory. CONTRIBUTION OF THE RESEARCH: A healthy life style which includes meditation, exercises and diet can help in coping up with distress. Psychotherapy,cognitive retraining and music therapy can regain the working memory and cortisol levels.

EFFECT OF LIFE SKILL TRAINING ON WELL BEING OF ADOLESCENTS

ABSTRACT

In order to build a flourishing community, it is essential to know what is required and what has to be done. It is obvious that one can become productive with sound mental health because with it one is thinking, feeling and doing positive and constructive behavior. Adolescence is a critical developmental period with long term implications for health and well-being of the individual and for the society as a whole. Mental health issue of adolescents period is considered important as this period is a fruitful period for channelizing their energy and taking preventive measures too. Life Skill training is a tremen- dous tool, which is effective in this regard. Present study is a step moving towards in this direction of enhancing well-being of adolescents through development of life skills. In present study, a sample of 200 students from 10th class was selected from a CBSE affiliated school of district Kaithal. Pre-Test of two scales viz. Life Skill Assessment scale and Well-Being Manifestation Scale was done. Intervention was provided to 65 students out of 200 students who were low and very low in different dimensions of life skills. It was given by dividing life skills into three categories: Thinking skills, Social Skills and Negotiation skills. Results of the study have shown improvement in Self-Awareness, Empathy, Effec- tive Communication, Creative Thinking, and Problem Solving, Coping with stress and coping with Emotions dimensions of Life skills. There is significant improvement in Global Scores of Life skills of students. Significant improvement has also been seen in Mental Balance, Social Involvement, Sociabil- ity and Control of self and environment dimensions of well-Being. Total score of well-Being has also been improved significantly after the training program.

ABSTRACT

The present study aims to examine the effect of in-service training program given to regular school teachers as professional development on their knowledge about children with special education needs and inclusive education. The sample consists of 149 regular school teachers from CBSE and Matriculation schools in and around Chennai. Their knowledge about children with special education needs and inclusive education was assessed using Knowledge about Children with Special Education Needs and Knowledge about Inclusive Education tools designed for the study. Paired t-test was used to assess the effectiveness of in-service training program for regular school teachers. The study revealed that there is significant increase in the knowledge about children with special education needs and inclusive education in regular school teachers following the in-service training program

SOCIAL SUPPORT SYSTEM: DOES IT REDUCE THE PAIN OF WORK STRESS AND IMPROVE THE EMPLOYEE'S JOB PERFORMANCE?

ABSTRACT

The present research was intendent to address the following question i.e. 'does social support system available at family and workplace can reduce the pain of work stress? and further, and improve the job performance of employees? The data for the study was collected on a total 428 employees of Uttar Pradesh police organization consisting of 287 males and 141 females police personnel from 12 districts of Uttar Pradesh with different ranks and varied in age. The respondents were given measures related to social support system consist of social support available at family and workplace, work stress and job performance. Results showed that (1) social support system in terms of workplace social support and family social support was negatively related to overall work stress and their dimensions. (2) Work stress is decreasing the overall job performance of employees (3) Out of the seven dimensions of work stress, stress due tonature of duty is found as the best predictor of overall assessment job performance and at organization level while lack of support is emerged as the best predictor of individual level assessment of job performance, while lack of resources is found as the best predictor of department level assessment of job performance (4) As a moderating variable, social support system is significantly moderated the relationship between work stress and job performance which implies that as the amount of social support (workplace and family level) increases, leads to high levels of job performance instead of facing work stress at workplace. Results were discussed in the light of the model proposed for the study.

Conflict and Mental Health in Youth: Insights from Kashmir

ABSTRACT

Conflict of any course and nature has its impact on youth. Youth are emotionally sensitive and are more vulnerable to be driven by the social changes. Youth can be carried by the most influential move- ment of national importance. In the active conflict zones, people have a detrimental impact on their mental health. Disturbed and antisocial behaviors, such as family Conflict and aggression towards oth- ers are the offshoots of psychological trauma. There are numbers of psychological consequences like depression, anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorders to name few as the consequences of conflicts. The primary objective of this research paper is to investigate the impact of conflicts on youth of Kash- mir and thereby analyze the consequences on mental health through review of literature. The attempt is made to establish The relationship between the incidents of conflicts, their personal experiences, perception and realized mental health consequences. It is clearly revealed from studies that the emotional and psycho- logical impact of the resulting violence is deeply felt by all, irrespective of gender, age, occupation and location. The uncertainty of life is usually summed up in a common utterance that once people leave home, they are not certain if they would return again. Conflicts are preconditioned to have toll on the people destabilizing their economic, social and political lives. Exposure to these events can create last- ing detrimental effects on physical and mental health of young population.

Effect of Life Skill Training on Well Being of Adolescents

STRESS AMONG CARDIOVASCULAR PATIENTS: ROLE OF GENDER, AGE AND NATURE OF PATIENTS

ABSTRACT

An attempt was made in the present investigation to study the role of gender, age and nature of patients on stress among cardiovascular patients in the age group of 40-60 years. The subjects of the present investigation were drawn from various Districts of Andhra Pradesh, India by using random sampling technique. Perceived stress scale developed by Cohen et al., (1983) was used to assess stress among cardiovascular patients. Means, SDs and ANOVA were employed to analyze the data. The find- ings of the study revealed that gender and age have significant impact on stress among cardiovascular patients.

IMPACT OF PARENTING STYLE, PEER PRESSURE AND EMOTIONAL MATU- RITY ON SCHOLASTIC ACHIEVEMENT AMONG COLLEGE STUDENTS

ABSTRACT

An attempt was made in the present investigation to study the impact of parenting style, peer pressure and emotional maturity on scholastic achievement among college students. Sample of the present study consists of 320 college students in Rayalaseema region of Andhra Pradesh State. The parenting style inventory developed by Darling (1997), Peer Pressure scale by Santor, Messervey and Kusumakar (2000), Emotional Maturity scale by Yashveer Singh and Mahesh Bargav (1990) and Scholastic Achieve- ment (Verbal Reasoning and Numerical ability) by George K. Bennett, Herald G. Seashore & Alexander G. Wesman (1959) were administered. Results reveal significant impact of parenting style, peer pres- sure and emotional maturity on scholastic achievement among college students.

OCCUPATIONAL STRESS AMONG RAILWAY EMPLOYEES

ABSTRACT

The study was planned to investigate the impact of nature of duty and job tenure on occupational stress among railway employees. Sample of the present study consists of 120 employees of South Cen- tral railway selected by using systematic random sampling technique. Occupational Stress Inventory developed by Samuel H. Osipow and Spokane, A.R. (1987) was administered to collect the data. Means, SD's and ANOVA used to find out whether nature of duty and job tenure have any significant impact on occupational stress. Results revealed that nature of duty and job tenure have significant influence on occupational stress.

Influence of Family, Income & Locality on Academic Adjustment among Underachievers of High School Students

ABSTRACT

The aim of the present study is to assess the impact of locality, type of family and family income on the academic adjustment among underachievers of high school. Sample consists of 400 high school students studying in rural and urban areas of Chittoor District of Andhra Pradesh. To measure academic adjustment, Rao's (1963) Academic adjustment Inventory was administered. The findings of the study reveal significant impact of locality, type of family and income on the academic adjustment among underachievers of high school.

MENTAL HEALTH STATUS AMONG RURAL AGED: ROLE OF DEPRESSION AND ANXIETY

ABSTRACT

An attempt was made in the present investigation to study the influence of depression and anxiety on mental health in a sample of 240 aged men and women in the age group of 60-70 years, living in rural areas of Chittoor District of A.P. Data were collected by using depression scale (Shamim Karim and Rama Tiwari., 1986), Thakur Death anxiety scale developed by Giridhar P. Thakur and Manju thakur (1986) and Mental health status inventory designed by Jagadish and Srivastava (1983). A 2X2 factorial design was employed. ANOVA was used to analyse the data. The findings of the study revealed that depression and anxiety have significant influence on mental health

ABSTRACT

An attempt was made in the present investigation to study the impact of personality type, health behavior and life satisfaction on stress among cardiovascular patients. The present study conducted on 320 cardiovascular male and female patients in the age group of 40-60 years and the subjects were drawn randomly from various Districts of Andhra Pradesh, India. Type A personality scale developed by Glazer (1978), Type D personality scale developed by Denollet (2005), Health behavior scale devel- oped by Ramamurthi and Jamuna (2005), Life Satisfaction Inventory developed by Ramamurthi (1969) and perceived stress scale developed by Cohen et al.,(1983) were used to assess Personality type, health behavior and life satisfaction and stress among cardiovascular patients.. Means, SDs and ANOVA were employed to analyze the data. Findings of the study revealed that personality type and life satisfaction have significant influence on stress among cardiovascular patients.
